David Suzuki has had a key impact on the environmental education that children receive. It was on November 8th
2007 that he launched the EarthCARE program at the event “You Matter! Respect & Responsibility in Our Community.” David spoke towards the Hastings
and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) to motivate the students involved in the program to make a change. EarthCARE
is a curriculum about the environment that goes hand-in-hand with the environmental efficient changes being made to fund schools
through the Better Schools Partnership (BSP).
It engages both staff and students by
informing them about how to reduce environmental problems that affect them everyday. Then in turn, they will act as mentors
to others around them about how to conserve the environment. EarthCARE will help these students improve their own moral character,
reading, writing, mathematics, and live an active lifestyle. So far, the HPEDSB has already reduced CO2 emissions
drastically, decreased utility costs, and received physical school upgrading simultaneously with the BSP plan. And there will
continue to be more improvements.
After he was interviewed for the school
newspapers and the media, he addressed the audience. David discussed with the students, staff, and community members how we
need to focus on specific things. By studying today’s climate-change problems, we will become ready for the future.
David Suzuki has helped this educational board make the commitment to environmental improvements by supporting it, being such
a well-known environmentalist himself. He is allowing his leadership qualities to shine through, by standing up for what he
believes in. Now, he will inspire students to follow his lead to conserve the environment. Then, he is able to invite and
guide them through this program. This EarthCARE program will really help to improve the environment. It will also instill
the knowledge about how important the environment is into the minds of the world’s future adult generation.
But, this environmental program doesn’t
just benefit the education field. The EarthCARE program will help to improve the community and business world as well. By
teaching the students, they will leave the school and will share it with their family, friends, neighbors, and other members
of the community. Then, these people will have the choice to find ways that they too can reduce their negative effect on the
environment. These students will also eventually get jobs when they become teenagers. They might take this knowledge of how
they improved their school environmentally and suggest their work to do the same. Eventually, they have a career or run their
own business after they are finished school. Then, they can again take this knowledge and implement it to fit with their business.
By investing his time into EarthCARE,
David Suzuki is investing in our futures. This program is not a short-term payoff, but rather one that is long-term. He is
helping our present world to improve our future world, and make it one that is around for the future. By standing behind EarthCARE,
he is educating students about our environment, informing the community as a whole, and will improve the way businesses operate
tomorrow.
